Black Indian, 30x24 inches
My great grandfather has skin as dark as night, yet in several census records he was listed as mulatto. As I asked family members about this I was told her was black, but had features of an "Indian".
When I was a little girl I remember us driving out to the country to visit him. He would sit on his porch in an old rocking chair, and tel us stories. He remembered hearing about the Trail of Tears from his mother. She passed down the knowledge of the terrible journey that took place in the 1830's that her ancestors survived. I didn't realize how much history was in the land that he sat on. I didn't realize then how black Oklahoma truly was.
